Climate Change Talks for Schools
“ I thoroughly recommend the climate change presentation. Adrian was very easy to listen to, captured his audience well with his use of images, humour, graphs and statistics – he got them involved and feeling good about how they can make a difference to Global Warming and Climate Change. We received positive feedback from students in grade 3 all the way through to grade 9. A wonderful way of getting a very important message across.”
Roberta Williams, Science Coordinator, Yarrawonga Secondary College
Many young people (and adults) have all sorts of misconceptions about climate change and its implications. These talks are designed to be fun, inquiry-based learning experiences where the students come to a deep understanding of how they are part of the problem and what they can do about climate change in their habits.
The essence of the talks are:
1. What do they know about climate change - we use this to uncover what it is they know and clear up an misconceptions.
2. Outline why action is urgent through outlining the predicted impact on them over the next 50 - 100 years. Talk about it from a historical and social aspect. The intention is to have them see that it is important for action now.
3. Ask them why are we talking to young people (firstly because they will be living through it mostly not us adults, secondly THEY waste a lot of energy!)
4. Inquiry into how they waste energy - this is a really fun section
5. Weave in the ways they can save energy and background understanding
6. Challenge them to do a home energy audit and save at least 20% of the energy bill and make a deal with their parents to get half the money saved back! These talks are perfect for kick starting sustainability and energy topics (or even to kick start a sustainability fundraising initiative) in schools!
